Curiosities
The locality of “Sarmede” is known for children’s illustrations. Everything started thanks to the artist Stepan Zavrel, a famous illustrator born in Prague in 1932 who, after attending the Faculty of Film Arts specializing in animated films, left his hometown in 1959 to be welcomed in the refugee camp in the town of Trieste. In Rome he attended the painting faculty of the Academy of Fine Arts, while in Germany he continued his studies on scenography and theatrical costume and then directed the animated film section of the Richard Williams studio in London. In 1968 he settled in the fraction of “Rugolo” in the village of “Sarmede” in an abandoned farmhouse and here he will weave a creative network with artists from all over Europe. In the eighties he gave lessons on the technique of drawing aimed at children, starting an art school. Zavrel died in 1999 and the International Exhibition of Illustration for Children was dedicated to him, making the “land of fairy tales” famous all over the world.
