Curiosities
The “Madonna del Carmine” Sanctuary was built in a place that has always been devoted to Our Lady who had protected the town from a serious calamity. Already in 1696, an ecclesiastical document reports for the first time the existence of the “Carmine” hermitage entrusted to the custody of a hermit, it was then in 1819 that the existing structure was enlarged while the works of 1913 coincided with the appointment as a Sanctuary.
Inside there is a wooden statuette depicting the Blessed Virgin the scapular of Carmine in her hands, a religious symbol linked to the Carmelite monastic order. According to tradition, the statuette was kept in the “Landrel” cave, and was then carried inside the Old Capital, still visible today near the church and here venerated as the “Our Lady of the Shepherds”.
