Curiosities
Not far from the locality of “Santa Lucia”, in the fraction of “Mandre”, from November 1915 to October 1917 the “King’s Bombers school” functioned, an important military structure conceived by the Italian army to instruct soldiers in bombardment shooting. This particular weapon, similar to a large mortar, was capable of firing at short distances a strong explosive charge necessary to create gaps between the fences and proved to be fundamental in trench warfare during the Great War. A century later, the barracks have been transformed into a museum where the visitor can relive the training phases thanks to a unique interactive path. Among the many soldiers who stopped at the locality of “Mandre”, we remember Riccardo Granzotto, called to build barracks at the school’s polygon. A native of “Santa Lucia”, the young mason went down in history as an Italian religious and sculptor of the Order of Friars Minor, proclaimed blessed in 1994 with the name of priest “Claudio”. A 189 km long spiritual journey between the villages of “Santa Lucia” and “Chiampo”, next to the city of “Vicenza”, is dedicated to him.
